Bipolar disorder is the 6th leading cause of disability in the world. This is an alarming  time to change our attitude within the academic community, also society needs to be aware of mental health awareness. the median age of onset of bipolar disorder is 25 years. At that age nearly all are on their college campus, so it becomes very important to have a look at this post, students with bipolar disorder can get help to identify and can find help.

What is bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a heavy and sudden mood swing. a disorder that has an effect on individuals’ moods. Generally, some people are very happy than others while some are a bit reserved. Some are a bit tempered some are talkative, some are emotional so emotions are not normal there.

Happiness, anger, sadness, anxiety, or fearfulness whenever a suddenly change mood like somebody who is generally reserved become a lot more happy, outgoing. that all are the effect of bipolar disorder.


2 phases of bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder occurs in 2 phases that is manic illness and depression.

Manic illness

manic illness is heavy or elevated mood swings that cause an increase amount of energy level

Ability to do work is high

Increased confidence level

Erratic talking

Feeling of power

Alcohol or drug abuse

Little need for sleep

High energy acute activity 

High sex drive

Aggression

Excessive good mood

Depression

Effects of bipolar disorder in college 

Poor decision making 

Heavy mood swings of mania or hyper mania cause a lack of concentration and very poor judgment that leads to very poor decision making.


Trouble in focusing

In bipolar disorder, there is very heavy traffic of thoughts racing in mind causes trouble in paying attention while in classroom learning or in test.


Impulsive behavior

Making rash decisions due to your flaunting mind can lead students in trouble. Skip the class, interfere with classwork & going to an alcohol party or any other decision can be harmful to the students.


 Insomnia

Bipolar disorder in its 2nd phase of depression causes a persistent problem in falling asleep. Due to this you continuously lose concentration.


Felling of boundless energy

A student in the hyper mania phase feels overloaded energy, limitless energy. They feel they don't need to sleep enough in order to that they make a plan to go so far. Sleepless night affects their classroom learning as well as academic performance.

College students' mental health is very much important as they are in their challenging time to become undergraduate to graduate.
